About Us

The Gus Purcell Quarterback School was founded by A.B. "Gus" Purcell, former football coach at Myers Park High School, Charlotte, North Carolina.  Coach Purcell's senior quarterbacks, over a fifteen year period, recieved college football scholarships to many of the country's leading colleges and universities, including: Alabama, Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Georgia, NC State, University of North Carolina, University of South Carolina, Tulsa and Wake Forest.  Two of these outstanding quarterbacks played in the NFL: Rick Arrington (Philadelphia Eagles) Jeff Beaver (Baltimore Colts).  All quarterbacks from 1951-1971 attended college.

Participants have attended the Quarterback School from as far away as Maine, Wyoming, Germany, San Antonio, Texas, and Miami, Florida.  Other states that have been represented over the years are: Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC.  The states in bold print were represented during the 2005 Quarterback School.

TO PARENTS, COACHES AND ASPIRING QUARTERBACKS:

Potentially great passing quarterbacks, in my opinion, can be discovered and developed, but not made.  There must be a sufficient amount of raw ability if a passer is to achieve greatness.
However, an individual with average physical and mental ability, through proper training and long hours of hard work, can achieve a degree of success as a quarterback and passer. He might not make it to the Pros, but should experience success in high school and possibly on the college level. No one can predict accurately who will become a great passing quarterback. Many factors will contribute to the degree of one's success or failure as a quarterback.
The individual growth pattern, hand size and sincere determination to achieve success will be factors in how successful one may become.
For this reason, the Quarterback School is open to any young man entering the 8th grade through rising high school seniors, regardless of size, shape, or past experience.  We can only guarantee that everyone enrolled will have the advantage of the same instruction. We will group according to age, grade and size, and work on the level that, in our opinion, would benefit the individual most.
The Gus Purcell Quarterback School is an instructional and participating type school. We provide an opportunity for all participants to receive as much individual instruction as possible during the four day school. For this reason, enrollment will be limited in order to assure that each participant will be in a small group and will get the maximum benefit of each staff member.
Our teaching staff consists of approximately 18 different staff members (nine each day). Some come 1 day, some 2 days, some 3 days and some 4 days. The non-teaching staff consists of: camp director, assistant director, trainer, video camera person and 6 to 8 high school coaches.
I am sure you will agree that our Quarterback School staff is the finest that can be found anywhere in the country. We sincerely hope everyone will benefit from the expert instruction and that this experience will better prepare each participant for the role of a future great quarterback.

Sincerely,

Gus Purcell
